Bike for LIFE is a community fitness and fundraising event that promotes and supports the LIFE Garden Program at the Lopez School. Bike for LIFE was inspired by Kay Keeler who created a team to ride in the Tour de Lopez and raised money for the LIFE Program as a way to celebrate her 75th birthday. Together Kay and her team raised $6000! This year she is turning 80 and will ride again in the Tour de Lopez for L.I.F.E. – she invites everyone to join her by getting fit for L.I.F.E. All funds raised will go directly to support and sustain our garden program and help to keep our students healthy, contributing members of our community.
The Bike for LIFE event encourages participants to set fitness goals for ___ miles biking or walking on or before April 23, 2016, and to raise money by seeking sponsors for their participation. This event promotes the goals of the Lopez School Wellness Policy by combining exercise with excellent nutrition available through school lunches and snacks, enhanced by the produce from the school garden.
On April 23, 2016, there will be a family-friendly event at the Lopez School campus with food, music and fun activities. Younger students will ride or walk in animal-themed teams on campus and older students are encouraged to ride in the Tour de Lopez or walk on nearby Lopez Hill. Guests and family members accompanying Tour de Lopez riders are welcome to join in the fun at school and learn about our program first-hand. Information about the Great Islands Clean-Up and the Procession of the Species will be provided at the event, in celebration of ecology, biodiversity, wellness, community and sustainability. Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate.
The Chamber of Commerce is supporting the LIFE Program fundraising efforts by waving registration fees for students who would like to ride in the Tour de Lopez. Participants of all ages who wish to raise money for the LIFE Program by riding in the Tour de Lopez must register on the Chamber website, are asked to stay on Tour de Lopez routes and honor their guidelines.
